Lore #67: Meta's Bold Move into Open Source AI
Good morning.
This week, Mark Zuckerberg made a bold and unexpected announcement. Meta is building AGI. And it will be open source.
I’m skeptical of how much they will open source, as this could bring further regulatory scrutiny to the company. But it’s exciting to see more significant players double down on AI and even openly state that AGI is the goal.
If they do open-source most of what they develop, it will accelerate the development of AGI by allowing brilliant minds from around the world to get involved. Not just OpenAI and Microsoft. Which is ultimately a great thing for humanity not to have one company at the center of all of AI.
Exciting times are ahead, with several players catching up to GPT-4 and GPT-5 on the way.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an Instagram reel the development of open-source artificial general intelligence (AGI) by combining two of Meta's AI research teams, FAIR and GenAI, aiming to advance various AI capabilities and make this technology widely available for public benefit.
OpenAI has announced its first partnership with a higher education institution, Arizona State University (ASU). The collaboration aims to integrate AI in various university activities like coursework, tutoring, and research. ASU plans to create a personalized AI tutor for students, especially in challenging STEM subjects, and develop AI avatars for creative studying aids. The university's prompt engineering course, now unrestricted by usage caps, has grown in popularity. OpenAI and ASU have assured that student privacy and intellectual property will be protected, with OpenAI not using ASU's data for training its models.
Separately, it was also reported this week that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is seeking to raise billions from global investors to create a network of semiconductor factories (fabs) to address potential chip shortages. (Link)

A fake AI-generated robocall impersonating President Joe Biden falsely advised New Hampshire voters to skip the primary election, claiming it would affect their ability to vote in November. The state's attorney general is investigating this as an illegal attempt to disrupt voting. This incident highlights concerns about the misuse of AI technology in election interference and the broader challenges it poses to democracy and information integrity.
Abu Dhabi's ruler, HH Sheikh Mohamed, announced the formation of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC) in the UAE.
The AIATC aims to develop strategies and collaborate globally to position Abu Dhabi as a hub for technology investments and talent, aligning with the UAE's vision to foster a post-hydrocarbon economy. This marks a significant step in integrating AI into various sectors, as evidenced by the launch of the Dubai.AI platform by Digital Dubai.

This Davos talk was translated seamlessly into English with HeyGen and ElevenLabs
Milei’s talk at Davos
This never happened.
But with AI (HeyGen) his voice is cloned and turned to English (Elevenlabs) and his mouth is re-synched to match the English words.
This is the true power of AI, anything can be consumed in any language
