It's been an amazing year filled with incredible technological advancements such as Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT. It's hard to process how fast things are changing, which is why we created this newsletter in the first place.  

We can't wait to see what the future holds for 2023, and we have some exciting news to share with you. Our new website will be launched on January 4th, and we have a surprise announcement planned for February 1st.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has joined our Generative AI community. We're now over 850 members strong, making us the largest community of its kind on Twitter.

When 2022 is looked back on in the history books, I believe ChatGPT will be considered the most significant release of 2022 overall.

In Lore Issue #8 we covered ChatGPT and its implications for society:

Since then, ChatGPT has reached millions of users, many of which came in the very first week.

It has become a major talking point around the world. Silicon Valley legend Marc Andreessen has started using it for humorous Twitter content.

The product has been so successful that now more people know about ChatGPT than the parent company, OpenAI.

And, people in Silicon Valley are now talking about how most products in 2023 should have chat interfaces like ChatGPT.

Myself, I've found ChatGPT to be the best coding companion ever. I've been using it on our new website and in most cases, it's a 10x improvement over going to StackOverflow.

I can't imagine what awaits us all in 2023 with the coming of GPT-4 and rumors that Google secretly has something even better up its sleeves.

OpenAI releases Point-E, Quora releases Poe, AI triples recovery in stroke patients

OpenAI releases Point-E, an AI that generates 3D models

Text to 3D was always the next logical step in AI image generation. Although it's not unique, OpenAI released its own 3D model generator this week.

Quora releases Poe

Quora has released an iOS app called Poe ("Platform for Open Exploration") which uses an AI chatbot to answer questions through dialog, similar to ChatGPT. The Android version will be available "soon".

AI is revolutionizing recovery in UK stroke patients

Thanks to cutting-edge AI technology, the number of stroke patients recovering and able to perform daily activities has tripled, increasing from 16% to 48% in a UK study.

GPT-4 is trending on Twitter and it's not even out yet

GPT-4 is expected to be 500x more powerful than GPT-3, and the below infographic has been posted a lot recently.

🤯 COOLEST THING THIS YEAR

Midjourney V4

There were so many cool things in AI this year that it was hard to pick a winner, but if I had to pick just one, it'd be Midjourney V4.

The year started off with mostly Silicon Valley insiders sharing photos of Dall-E. Then Midjourney public beta started in July, which was seen as an improvement over Dall-E. Then Stable Diffusion launched in August, which got tons of attention because it was open-source and allowed for more freedom.

Then, Stable Diffusion made bizarre moves with their community, which we covered in Lore Issue #2. Ever since then, they've been on the decline.

Then, Midjourney V4 dropped in November, which was a huge visual improvement over V3, which we created a thread to highlight.

And, well this chart does a pretty good job of summarizing what happened next and the current state of of Generative AI Art. As of now, Midjourney is the clear leader.

But as the chart shows, things can change quick. And not everyone thinks Midjourney has been a positive. Our community member Blind Imagery pointed out that with MJ V4 it 'leveled the field' and made outputs look too similar. Which is a fair point. Now with MJ V4 it's easy to create incredibly beautiful art.

🧠THINGS WE LEARNED

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says AGI "will make ChatGPT look like a boring toy"

According to OpenAI's Sam Altman (and literally everyone else), artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be the next major technological breakthrough, offering “amazing” upsides but also major challenges.

Twitter doesn't like AI bot tweets

With the rise of ChatGPT, people are trying all sorts of ways to use it for automation. One of these is automatic AI-generated tweets — but Twitter is not a fan.

AI can summarize podcasts

When Andrew Wilkinson tweeted that someone should develop an AI tool to summarize podcasts, several people pointed out that this had already been done.

The cyclical nature of AI

2022 has been an incredible year for Artificial Intelligence, especially generative AI. In the last few months we've seen ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion 2.0, and countless startups built on this infrastructure.

The industry is sailing high at the moment, although things tend to be cyclical in nature — and 2022 actually saw fewer deals than 2021 for AI as a whole.

This doesn't necessarily mark the beginning of an AI winter, though, and rapid developments in the industry are keeping it hot and, given the macroeconomic environment, doing relatively well.

When innovation slows and public interest starts to wane, we may see a cyclical decline in the overall industry. But for now, the buzz surrounding the upcoming release of GPT-4 next year is keeping everyone's attention focused, and much debate abounds on its implications for the world at large.
