Lore Issue #56: Biggest Week in AI This Year
Good morning,
What an insane week it has been!
First, Elon Musk announced "Grok," a ChatGPT competitor inspired by "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy." Surprisingly, in just a few months, xAI has managed to surpass the capabilities of GPT-3.5, signaling their impressive speed of execution and establishing them as a formidable long-term contender.
Then, OpenAI hosted their inaugural Dev Day, unveiling "GPT-4 Turbo," which boasts a 128k context window, API costs slashed by threefold, text-to-speech capabilities, auto-model switching, agents, and even their version of an app store slated for launch next month.
Sam Altman remarked that what they reveal next year will render the current advancements quaint by comparison. Meanwhile, rumors are spreading that OpenAI might be inching toward Artificial General Intelligence, achieving some basic level of self-improvement.
Amidst all this, Google has been conspicuously silent. Their anticipated "Gemini" project was expected to be a significant release, yet now OpenAI has surged even further ahead, with xAI gaining momentum.
I believe when GPT 5 comes out next year, the world will look completely different. What an exciting time to be alive.

OpenAI revealed its latest AI model, customizable GPTs and digital store at its first-ever Dev Day on Monday. The internet is buzzing with the news.
Developers can now build custom GPTs that can integrate with databases, automate email communications, or handle e-commerce transactions — all through a new digital marketplace. Coupled with reduced prices, this move could make development more accessible and innovative.
Elon Musk released Grok this week, a model competing with OpenAI but with its own unfair advantage: real-time access to data on the X platform.
“It’s also based & loves sarcasm. I have no idea who could have guided it this way 🤷♂️🤣” he wrote.
As soon as it’s out of early beta, xAI’s Grok system will be available to all X Premium+ subscribers.
xAI also released the xAI PromptIDE on Monday — an integrated development environment for prompt engineering and interpretability research.
