Lore Issue #55: AI Regulation Is Here

Good morning.

This week, the US made its first step towards AI regulation with Biden’s executive order. With the current wording it seems pretty tame compared to what it could have been. But, I do worry about the slippery slope of what it could turn into down the road.

On a more optimistic note, OpenAI is having their dev day later this week. Based on all of the optimistic things we’ve been hearing from people at OpenAI, I expect some big announcements to come out.

Two things I believe could get announced:

  • GPT 4.5 preview. Smarter model. Similar quality jump as 3.5 to 4.

  • OpenAI’s version of agents. Like BabyAGI on steroids.

  • Shield AI raised $200M at a $2.7B valuation to scale military autonomous flying tech (Link)

  • Abridge raised $30M to accelerate adoption of its proven generative AI solution across US healthcare systems (Link)

  • Arteria AI raised $30M to build modern documentation infrastructure for institutional finance (Link)

  • CentML raised $27M to make AI models run more efficiently (Link)

  • Cranium raised $25M to secure the AI revolution (Link)

  • Guidde raised $15.6M to reimagine software adoption with AI video (Link)

  • Eve raised $14M for its "personalized" AI legal assistant (Link)

  • Sprout.ai raised £5.4M for insurance claims automation (Link)

  • Nortech AI raised €2.5M to provide AI-driven optimizations for the maritime industry (Link)

Coming up:

  • Google commits to invest $2 billion in OpenAI competitor Anthropic (Link)

  • Mistral, a Wannabe OpenAI of Europe, Seeks $300 Million (Link)

President Biden has issued an Executive Order with the aim of advancing AI in the United States. The order outlines objectives such as setting new safety and security standards for AI, protecting Americans' privacy, promoting equity and civil rights, safeguarding consumers, supporting workers, fostering innovation and competition, advancing American leadership in AI worldwide, and ensuring responsible government use of AI.

The reactions to this order have been varied. Some consider it a routine administrative step, while others see it as potentially problematic. Concerns have been raised about the interpretation of the 'equity' section, with some speculating it might introduce political influences into AI.

Forbes has launched Adelaide, a news search tool powered by Google Cloud that offers personalized news recommendations using AI.

Adelaide’s responses are based on Forbes articles, making content discovery more intuitive. It will soon be accessible to Forbes' 150 million readers.
